A basic overview of Google Analytics
August 29, 2018
Analytics helps track your website's audience to assist you with strategy and planning to increase conversions. There are a number of analytical tools Hotjar, Clicky, Open Web Analytics, and more but the go-to platform is Google Analytics, it's free, has copious amounts of data, and it's Google.
Notable data you can track using Google Analytics
- Real-time overview - using a device you can track real-time use of your site seeing how many people are on your site, what device they are using, where in the world they are, what page they are on, and where on the internet they came from
- Audience Overview
Session - A period of time a user in on your site
Users - number of people that have initiated a session
Page Views
Pages per session
Average session time
Bounce rate - the percent of people who land on your website and leave without any interaction
New sessions %
Country, City, Language
Mobile - are they on your site using a Desktop, Mobile, or Tablet
Benchmarking - your can also benchmark your analytics with your industry
- Acquisition

Referral - People that have come to your site via a link from another website
Direct - People who have typed your site directly into the browser or have your site saved in their bookmarks, favourites, etc.
Social - People that have come to your site via your social media
NOTE: This is also where I can set-up Google Search Console and link it into analytics so that you can get a better understanding of what people are searching for (Query) that are leading to your site, how many times those keywords are put in front of someone (Impressions), what percent of people actually click through to your site (CTR) and their average rank on Google (Rank).
- Behaviour
Look into what pages people are viewing and the data relevant to how they are interacting with them
Behaviour Flow - Gives you an interactive diagram of how a visitor comes to your website and what steps they take as they flow through your site
Site Speeds - gives you data around the speed of aspects of your website
Experiments
- Conversions
This is where you set up goals for your site and go to for all the information revolving around conversions your site has made.
This is just a small outline into the world of Analytics, in particular Google Analytics, but if it's something you're interested in implementing with your business's website or want to know how Google Analytics can help you, then feel free to contact me.
